Job Board
PostDoctoral Position (2 years)
The Working group of Prof. Dr. Possner (Atmospheric Physics and Climate) from the Institute of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences, Goethe University Frankfurt am Main searches for a candidate for a position of
Research Assistant (m/f/d)
(PostDoc)
(E 13 TV-G-U)
starting from 01.07.2025 or as soon as possible. The position is limited until 30.06.2027. The salary grade is based on the job characteristics of the collective agreement applicable to Goethe University (TV-G-U).

This project studies Southern Ocean boundary layer clouds in atmosphere-ocean coupled ICON-XPP simulations. This will be investigated in ocean eddy resolving and eddy parameterizing simulations. Special attention is paid to cloud radiative effects and the representation of cloud processes. The project is integrated into the Hans Ertel Center and includes direct collaborations with project partners of the Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg and partners of the German Weather Service.

As a requirement for the application, you should have a scientific degree and hold (or be close to defending) a Ph.D. in cloud physics or atmosphere-ocean interactions. Proficient skills in programming languages such as Fortran and Python are an absolute necessity. Publication of the results in peer-reviewed scientific journals and presentations at international conferences are expected. Teaching requirements are 2 hours per week during the semester. Further funds for professional development are also available.

We offer you an interesting, diverse and varied field of activity in an open-minded and committed team. We are a family-friendly employer with an attractive collective bargaining agreement (TV-G-U), company pension plan, currently free LandesTicket Hessen and a wide range of continuing education opportunities. The Riedberg campus has excellent transport links. Your workplace is located in a pleasant working atmosphere with all the advantages of a modern university environment.

Interested, or want to know more? Then please send your application including CV, cover letter, and list of publications by 30.04.2025 as one PDF to Prof. Dr. Anna Possner, apossner@iau.uni-frankfurt.de.
Open PhD positions
We currently have funds for two PhD positions working on either:

PhD Position (3 years)
The working group of Prof. Dr. Possner (Cloud Physics in the Climate System) from the Institute of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences, Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main searches for a candidate for a position of
Research Assistant (m/f/d)
(PhD candidate)
(E 13 TV-G-U, 65% part-time)
starting from 01.07.2025 or as soon as possible for a limited period of three years. The salary grade is based on the job characteristics of the collective agreement applicable to Goethe University (TV-G-U).

The aim of the project is a better process understanding of the boundary layer cloudiness over the Southern Ocean in ICON simulations including new (HALSO-South) and old (SOCRATES and MARCUS) measurement campaigns and long-term remote sensing measurements in Invercargill, New Zealand (GoSouth). The project is integrated into the Hans Ertel Centre and includes direct collaborations with project partners of the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research and partners of the German Weather Service. The Southern Ocean is a region with few vertical-resolution observations and complex cloud processes. Using ICON simulations in combination with observations, you will contribute to an improved climate-relevant process understanding of these clouds. In addition to the research, you will be expected to teach 2 semester hours per week (2 LVS).

As a requirement for the application, you should have a scientific degree in Meteorology, Physics, Atmospheric, Environmental, or Computational Sciences, Statistics, or other related disciplines. The position will require extensive shell scripting, analyses in Python, and a graphical presentation of the results. Strong communication skills in English (oral and written) are desired. Pre-existing knowledge of cloud physics, or atmospheric modelling is desirable, but not required.
